Summit County Probate Court, Summit DD bring art show to courthouse

AKRON, Ohio - Summit County Probate Court is again partnering with Summit DD (the Summit County Developmental Disabilities Board) to bring an art show to the Summit County Courthouse.

Art created by Summit DD artists will be on display in the courthouse atrium and in the hallways near the Probate Court during regular courthouse hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, from Oct. 15 to Nov. 16.

A reception with the artists is scheduled for noon to 1 p.m. Monday, Oct 22 in the courthouse atrium. Light refreshments will be served and the artists will discuss the inspiration for their work, much of which will be for sale.

“Our partnership with Summit DD brings awareness of the abilities of these talented artists to the public eye and continues to allow respite through art in this amazing public space,” Judge Elinore Marsh Stormer said in a news release.

Stormer initiated the courthouse art show last year, as well as a free lunchtime concert series, which kicked off last Friday with Urban Troubadour, musicians who rove the city performing.

“Once again, we see our community coming together to support the talents of people of all abilities,” said Summit DD Superintendent John Trunk in the release. “When others, like Judge Stormer and the Probate Court, take the initiative to promote the achievements of people with disabilities, we at Summit DD feel like our emphasis on full community inclusion is really happening.”

The events also are intended to remind people that the courthouse belongs to the community and that the public is welcome there, said Community Outreach Specialist Lisa Mansfield.

“People who are coming here for a difficult reason can stop for a minute and see something beautiful,” she said. “For some of the people who come here, this is the worst day of their life. We see their faces change when they see the art.”

The Summit County Courthouse is located at 209 S. High St. in downtown Akron. For more information about the art show, call 330-643-7346 or send an email.
