Landmark Topless Bar Changing, Again
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ It’s not a sign of the times.
So the illuminated likeness of pioneer topless dancer Carol Doda will be coming down from its perch above the Condor Club, which will become a sports bar or comedy club under new ownership.
The topless craze began at the club 24 years ago when Doda donned a topless bathing suit and climbed atop the club’s piano. She was featured at the Broadway nightspot until two years ago.
Broadway, once jammed with barkers for numerous skin shows, has been moving upscale during the past few years. In December 1987, the Condor was sold by owner David Benson to Tex Norton, who tried to switch from topless entertainment to a family-oriented Barbary Coast review. But the new show never caught on. Benson bought the club back a few months later and brought back topless.
The club now has been sold to Timothy Chee, David Seto and Shacuan Seto.
″They want to put something in there that will make money, that the city will like and that will upgrade the street,″ said a spokesman for the partners. ″They haven’t made up their minds whether it will be a nightclub or a sports bar.″
The 40-foot female form now on the sign will be replaced with a mural of sports figures or a picture of entertainers who have performed in the area.
