Schools Are Opening; Drive With Caution

A nun, Sister of Mercy, told her students that prayer will never be taken out of school completely as long as they have tests. A tip or two to keep our children safe ... Swoyersville Mayor Christopher Concert urges drivers to be extra cautious now that school is open. Slow down before and after school, when the children are getting picked up and dropped off, and please pay attention! Also, Swoyersville Mayor Christopher Concert is going to the Big Apple on Saturday, Dec. 1. “My 10th annual December New York City bus trip, this always sells out,” Concert said. “There are only a few seats left. A portion of the ticket sales will go to the Swoyersville Kiwanis, of which I am a member. The trip will leave the Pittston park n ride promptly at 6:30 a.m. Participants are on their own in New York City. Bus will leave New York at 6:45 p.m. to return home. Cost is $35 per person. Kiwanis scholarship golf tournament The Swoyersville Kiwanis Club is sponsoring a Scholarship Open at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Wilkes-Barre Golf Club, Wilkes-Barre. Format is captain and crew. Shotgun start is at 1 p.m. Cost is $80 per golfer, which includes green fees, cart, dinner, prizes and refreshments. There will be a longest drive hole and 50-50 hole. Chicken barbecue The Luzerne Fire Department’s annual chicken barbecue will be from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, at the fire department hall, 66 Tener St., Luzerne. Cost is $9. Spartan ice hockey The Spartan Ice Hockey Club will hold registrations from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at the Kingston Rec Center. Registration is open to students grades 7 through 12 in the Wyoming Valley West School District along with Hanover, Nanticoke, Holy Redeemer and parts of Wilkes-Barre Area. Free movie night The Edwardsville Hometown Committee will hold a free movie night at John Hopkins Park, High Street, Edwardsville, on Friday, Sept. 7. Concession stand will be open with snacks available for purchase. Also the committee will host its inaugural “Market in the Park” event from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at John Hopkins Park, Edwardsville. Rain date is Sept. 9. Event is open to the public.
