ABC Bumps Football for Clinton

August 18, 1998

NEW YORK (AP) _ ABC preempted coverage of ``Monday Night Football″ to show President Clinton’s address to the nation about his testimony to a grand jury.

ABC moved coverage of an exhibition game between the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots at 10 p.m. EDT to ESPN2 _ also a Disney-owned network.

ABC Sports spokesman Mark Mandel said it was the first time a ``Monday Night Football″ telecast has been moved to another network, but that ABC has preempted coverage in the past for major news stories.

``News events will always take precedence over any other programming,″ Mandel said. ``We always bow to decisions of news executives in these manners.

``Fortunately we had an outlet available in ESPN2. This is the best of both worlds.″
