ELON, N.C. (AP) _ Former President Bush poked fun at himself and offered students some old-fashioned wisdom in a convocation speech at Elon College.

Bush amused his audience with his imitation of comic Dana Carvey impersonating him, raising his arms and saying, ``Not gonna do it _ wouldn’t be prudent.″

On a more serious note, Bush told students in Tuesday’s speech that the American family is ``under siege.″

``If as president I had the power to do one thing, it would have been to strengthen the American family,″ he said. ``The trouble is, there is no law to do that.″

Bush urged students to serve others, volunteer their time, live boldly and listen to their parents.

``Don’t expect the advice-giving to stop after you graduate _ or even if you become president of the United States,″ said Bush, referring to his son George W.
