Alvin spoils Lady Mavs’ home opener 38-29

November 7, 2018

Helped by a 6-1 advantage in 3-point goals, Alvin High School’s varsity girls basketball team spoiled Pasadena Memorial’s home opener with a 38-29 verdict Tuesday night.

The Lady Yellowjackets only drained two of their six in the second half, but the team’s final one was big.

Memorial, after only scoring one point in the first period, had clawed within 25-22 when Alvin drained its last bonus bucket, giving the Lady Yellowjackets a shot in the arm heading into the final eight minutes.

Alvin then held a 5-2 advantage in fourth-period field goals, all inside the arc.

Mercedes Mancha led all scorers with 20 points, but she had 15 at the break. Mariah Byone was the headache for Memorial in the rebounding battles.

Memorial received a balanced scoring attack from six girls, but it just wasn’t enough of it nor were the shots falling.

Alexia Rangel finished with eight points and Abigail Samson tacked on six. In the rebounding battles, Samson, a First Team All-District selection last winter because mainly of her work on the boards, had a terrific third period under the defensive glass. She had four boards that period and three more in the fourth.

“We’re very young and we’ve got tons of potential. We only have one senior right now. I’ve got three freshmen, a sophomore and the rest are juniors. We need to learn to crash the boards and put the ball in the hoop,” Lady Mavs head coach Michelle Steele said.
