Biting Incidents Involving K-9 Chase

September 6, 2018

Biting incidents involving Chase

• Joshua Fought, 44, was bitten during a highly publicized arrest on Public Square in July 2017. Police alleged Fought was disorderly after being confronted about having an open container of beer and struggled as he was being handcuffed, prompting Chase to “assist” in the arrest. But a jury later found Fought not guilty of resisting arrest, and he currently has a federal civil rights lawsuit pending against the city.

• Another biting incident took place later that month after a man allegedly choked his girlfriend and stole her car. The suspect was bitten during his capture.

• The third bite occurred with an incident involving a fleeing felon wanted out of Philadelphia in December. Chase tracked down a suspect hiding under a truck, but bit an officer during the capture and “mauled” the officer’s leg, officials have said.

• Officer Shane Smith was bitten on the leg during a manhunt Tuesday afternoon. Witnesses to the bite reported Smith was standing still and holding the perimeter when Chase bit his leg without provocation. City officials say the bite is under investigation.
