Cao, Gabbard, Pope head to state golf tournament

May 9, 2019

Clements sophomore Natalie Cao will represent Fort Bend ISD in UIL state golf competition this year, qualifying for the Class 6A tournament May 13-14 at Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown.

Cao earned her state spot as the third and final individual medalist at the Region III-6A championships, edging Ridge Point’s Reagan Gray in a one-hole playoff. Both had scores of 150 after two rounds.

Cao carded a 75 both days, leading Clements to an eighth-place finish overall. Ridge Point finished fifth of 16 girls teams with a 651.

Fulshear sends two players to state, as Tristan Gabbard and Peyton Pope made school history. Gabbard will compete in the 4A girls tournament May 13-14 at Plum Creek Golf Course in Kyle, with Pope playing in the 4A boys tournament on the same course May 20-21.

Gabbard finished third overall at the Region IV-4A tournament with a 158. She was tied for the lead after a first-round 77, adding an 81 to clinch a state spot.

Pope tied for fourth place in IV-4A, carding consecutive rounds of 77 for a 154.
