Today an historic anniversary
Texas was admitted as the 18th state of the union Dec. 29, 1845. The state government was installed formally in Austin on Feb. 19, 1846, 173 years ago today.
Capital known for concerts
Austin also is known as the live-music capital of the world. The annual South by Southwest Festival is held there each spring and returns from March 8-17 this year.
Lone Star state for a reason
Texas is known as the Lone Star State. That, in part, is because of its status as an independent nation from 1836-45.
Lots of land
Texas includes 267,339 square miles, or 7.4 percent of the nation’s total area.
High cattle count, too
The state’s cattle population is estimated to be about 16 million.
