Open House at IdeaLab Jan. 29

FITCHBURG -- The Fitchburg State University campus community is invited to celebrate the completion of the first phase of the Theater Block renovation with an open house at the ideaLab from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29.

The open house will follow a ribbon-cutting ceremony that starts at 10 a.m. that will feature remarks from President Richard Lapidus and Mayor Stephen L. DiNatale.

The ideaLab and game design studio are located on the second floor of the theater block at 717 Main St. Students will be using the space this semester for the first time. Parking for the open house is available on Main Street and behind 700 Main St. There will also be shuttle service between campus and the theater block from 10 a.m. to noon, with service departing campus from the Miller Hall turnaround.

Share some laughs, help playground

FITCHBURG -- A Friday comedy show at the Knights of Columbus will raise money for the Sam Pawlak Community Playground at Coolidge Park.

The show will take place at the Knights of Columbus hall at 165 Electric Ave. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and Jerry Caruso will headline. Tickets are $20 and spaghetti and meatballs will be served for $7.

There will also be auctions and a 50/50 raffle. A silent auction will feature New England sports memorabilia. Pawlak served on the Fitchburg School Committee and worked as a teacher, administrator, and coach in schools around the region. He died in 2015 after battling ALS, which he was diagnosed with in 2013.

Narcan training, distribution slated

FITCHBURG -- Narcan training and distribution will take place on the third Tuesday of each month.

The city’s Health Department Substance Abuse Prevention and the Massachusetts Opioid Abuse Prevention Collaborative will host training at 5:30 p.m. at Community Health Connections at 326 Nichols Road. Feb. 19 is the next training day. People will learn now to recognize signs of an opioid overdose and what to do if one happens.

Narcan is sprayed in the nose of someone who has overdosed and can help block opioids and restore normal breathing. AIDS Project Worcester will distribute Narcan to those who enroll in the training.
