Bethel Missionary Baptist Church celebrates 97th anniversary
On Sunday, Oct. 14 the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, at 401 No. 5th Ave. in Pocatello, will celebrate its 97th anniversary during an 11 a.m. worship service.
Theme: “Worshipping In The Unity Of Christ”, 1st Cor. 1:10. Guest speaker will be Rev. Carey McCall of Utah.
The congregation under the leadership of Pastor Emeritus William S. Beard is so pleased to still be as strong as it is, much like those persons of faith who established the church in 1921.
Since last year’s anniversary we have lost two of our members who passed away. They are Mrs. Nina McCully who had served as an usher for many years during worship service, and Russell Sanders who served as one of Bethel’s Sunday School instructors. They both are truly missed.
Pastor Beard and his wife, Geraldine who drive from Ogden, Utah each Sunday, are a real blessing to Bethel’s congregation. Having served as Bethel’s Pastor for 18 years (1989-2007) and then returning five years ago, Pastor Beard’s sermons are even more powerful than before. All who hear him are really blessed. He is joined in the pulpit by recently ordained Rev. Maurice Sowell who also comes across powerfully.
Bethel is moving to honor some of its long-time members who are quite active with the congregation. One is Alfreda Vann who was honored as “Bethel’s Woman Of Faith” because of all the areas in which she serves, such as providing the order-of-service bulletin each Sunday, is Church Treasure and helps with 1st Sunday lunches.
Also honored was Margaret Evans as Bethel’s Woman of Wisdom. She is seen as very friendly, always giving hugs and very humble and wise. She received a Kente shawl and pen.
Another honoree is Mary Watkins who was honored as having the oldest membership - 80 years. At the age of ten she was baptized in a canal here in Pocatello along with other youth.
Our deacons are a “must” during our worship services. They are Robert L. Robertson and Aaron LeVels. And they are even assisted by some of Bethel’s youth during the services.
Now we will look forward to our 98th! Lunch will be served following the service.
