Super Victory for Leominster 13U Squad

November 8, 2018

The Leominster American Youth Football 13U football team defeated Clinton, 24-6, for the Division 1 Super Bowl title this past Sunday at Foley Field in Worcester, capturing its first championship.

The Blue Devils will now play in a New England Regional Division 1 semifinal against the East Providence 13U Patriots on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Marlboro Middle School.

Leading 6-0 at halftime, the Blue Devils turned it on in the third, tearing up the turf at Foley Stadium. After forcing a punt on Clinton’s opening possession, the Blue Devils capped a six-play, 62-yard drive with a 27-yard touchdown run by E. J. Machuca.

Machuca added another score on Clinton’s next possession, picking off a pass and returning it 30 yards for a touchdown on a third-and-nine toss under pressure from Jared Phillips, Joshua Cormier and Steven Diaz.

A Gaels punt after a three-and-out gave Leominster the ball on its own 30. From there, it took the Blue Devils eight plays to go 70 yards, with Makai Newton capping it off with a 24-yard TD run -- his second of the game -- to put Leominster up 24-0 through three quarters.

Cormier, Phillips and Newton each recorded 1.5 sacks in the final 10 minutes, though Clinton managed to erase the shutout with a touchdown with three minutes left.

“From my first-year players to my five-year vets, they all played a part in Sunday’s win,” head coach James Perla said.

Newton’s 36-yard touchdown in the first quarter accounted for the only scoring of the first half.
