Silent Screen Star of ‘Metropolis’ Dead at 90
ASCONA, Switzerland (AP) _ Brigitte Helm, who starred as the robot-vamp in Fritz Lang’s silent screen classic ``Metropolis,″ has died, a family spokesman said. She was 90.
The spokesman refused to give any details, but municipal authorities in Ascona, where she had lived for a number of years, said she died Tuesday.
Local newspapers in the southern, Italian-speaking canton of Ticino said she died of heart failure.
Helm was best known for her work in the 1926 film ``Metropolis,″ in which she played both a virtuous young woman named Maria and a robot-seductress made to look just like the real Maria.
Helm next made a string of movies in which she almost always had the starring role, and she easily made the transition to sound movies.
Her last film was ``Ein idealer Gatte″ (An Ideal Spouse) in 1935. She married twice, the second time to industrialist Hugo Kunheim, with whom she had four children. Details on survivors were not immediately available.
