Carrie Fisher Has Drug Problem

November 3, 1998

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Carrie Fisher has become addicted to prescription drugs and has voluntarily checked into a detoxification program, her spokeswoman said.

Ms. Fisher, who is perhaps best known for her role as Princess Leia in the ``Star Wars″ trilogy, realized she had a problem shortly after undergoing dental surgery, publicist Carol Stone said Monday.

``The combination of the prescribed medication required for manic depression and the pain medication prescribed to her recently from getting dental implants caused her to recognize the problem early on,″ Ms. Stone said.

Manic depression, also known as bipolar disorder, is a mental illness marked by wide mood swings.

Ms. Fisher has been in drug rehabilitation before. Her 1985 stay inspired her best-selling novel ``Postcards from the Edge,″ which was adapted into a hit movie. Fisher went on to write other novels.

Ms. Stone would neither say where Ms. Fisher was being treated nor elaborate on the addiction.
