MARIJUANA LEGALIZATION-NEW YORK

ALBANY, N.Y. _ Efforts to legalize marijuana for recreational use in New York are gaining steam, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo predicts a bill will pass this year. But don’t expect to see pot shops opening up from Brooklyn to Buffalo anytime soon. While reaching a compromise will prove difficult, lawmakers in New York say they have the advantages of seeing what’s worked and what hasn’t in other states that have eliminated the ban. TEEN SUICIDES _ A study finds that poor economies and the associated stress on families and adolescents is a common factor for high teen suicide rates in rural areas of Colorado. The study also found risk factors common to rural areas include limited transportation options and associated lack of access to help, limited insurance and provider options, lack of funds and resources for mental health programs.

RIVER RESTORATION _ Work has begun in northern Colorado on a $4 million project to improve the habitat in and around the Big Thompson River and make the waterway itself more resilient to flooding. The project is being done on a stretch of river in west Loveland where floods in 2013 caused damage.

FORT COLLINS-POLICE SHOOTING _ A Colorado police officer has shot and injured an armed man who was having a confrontation with a woman. The incident occurred about 10 p.m. Saturday in Fort Collins.

SNOWMOBILE FATAL _ A man has died in a snowmobile crash in Mesa County in western Colorado. Authorities say the incident happened about 12:30 p.m. Sunday in a canal at Grand Junction.
