Falmouth man pleads guilty to shooting stepfather
BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) — A Falmouth man whose lawyer said he killed his stepfather to protect his mother from abuse has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Devante (duh-VON’-tay) Fernandes, who was initially charged with first-degree murder in connection with the April 2012 death of 40-year-old John Williams, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge Monday under a deal with prosecutors.
The Cape Cod Times (http://bit.ly/12Jbl6R ) reports that sentencing was scheduled for Sept. 27. The 20-year-old Fernandes faces 15 to 20 years in prison.
According to court documents, Fernandes ran two miles to his mother’s home after she called him begging for help. Prosecutors say he shot his stepfather four times. Williams died two days later at a Boston hospital.
