Police: Dunmore Store Clerk Helped Customers Steal
A clerk at a Turkey Hill in Dunmore helped shoppers steal thousands of dollars of merchandise during the course of several weeks, borough police charged.
Brittanny Racquel Thorne, 27, 507 Smith St., Dunmore, is charged with a felony count of theft. She worked at the Turkey Hill on South Blakely Street.
Between Nov. 21 and Jan. 10, Thorne bagged up food, drinks, cigarettes and cell phone accessories, among other items, without ringing them up, essentially letting customers walk out with free goods, according to an affidavit filed by Detective Alicia Hallinan.
Thorne told police she did not really know the people she gave stuff to, then later admitted one of them was her roommate. Police could not confirm that was true.
In an interview with police, she said she knew it was wrong and estimated the value of stolen merchandise at about $4,000. A loss prevention manager for the store told police the store has lost $30,000 since hiring Thorne.
Thorne worked the overnight shift from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. The thefts, captured on camera, occurred between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m.
Thorne is free after posting $4,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday.
