Man charged in death of ex-wife’s boyfriend
A Houston man on Monday was charged with murder in the death of his ex-wife’s boyfriend, Houston police said.
Alex Queroz, 23, had a history of domestic violence before he allegedly shot and killed Oscar Maradiaga inside the apartment in southwest Houston where Maradiaga and Queroz’s ex-wife and toddler son live, police said. The woman and 3-year-old child were not injured.
Around 8:45 p.m. Saturday, Queroz was trying to break into the apartment in the 5200 block of Gasmer Drive through a window, police said. When Maradiaga, also 23, approached the window, Queroz allegedly shot him several times, then fled the scene, Houston police said.
When paramedics arrived at the apartment, they pronounced Maradiaga dead, police said. The medical examiner had not yet determined a cause of death.
An hour later, Houston police arrested Queroz following a chase down the North Freeway.
It’s unclear why Queroz was allegedly trying to enter the apartment or why he allegedly shot and killed Maradiaga.
Queroz in April 2016 had been charged with assault of a family member, a felony, for threatening a girlfriend with a piece of glass against her neck, according to court records. That charge was later dropped to deadly conduct, a lesser charge.
The deadly conduct charge was dismissed, too, and Queroz was ordered to undergo anger management counseling, decision-making counseling, and to donate $200 to the Houston Area Women’s Center, which supports survivors of domestic violence, according to court records.
