June 3, 2000

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) _ A drunken policeman opened fire on a military patrol with an automatic rifle Friday, killing seven people and injuring two, authorities said.

Police and soldiers were on a joint patrol near the village of El Tablon, about 120 miles east of the capital, when one of the police officers opened fire, officials said.

Five soldiers and two bystanders, both women, were killed. A policeman and a seven-month-old baby were wounded.

Military troops assisted by police helicopters arrested police officer Luis Navarrette in connection with the attack.

Authorities said they didn’t know of a motive for the shooting.
