McCormick CEO Dies of Heart Attack
SPARKS, Md. (AP) _ Bailey A. Thomas, chairman and chief executive officer of McCormick & Co., died Thursday of a heart attack. He was 63.
Thomas died of a heart attack suffered at his Reisterstown home, company officials said. He had been at work Wednesday and showed no signs of being ill, said company spokesman Mac Barrett.
Born in Crisfield, Thomas attended schools in Princess Anne and received a business degree from the University of Baltimore.
Thomas joined the spice and seasonings company in 1961 and had been a director since 1977. He was named president and chief executive officer in March 1992 and became chairman and CEO on Jan. 1, 1993.
President and chief operating officer H. Eugene Blattman will head the company until the board of directors can meet to choose a successor, probably in the next few days, Barrett said.
Sparks-based McCormick has 8,600 employees worldwide, including 2,000 in Maryland.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Jennefer, and four sons.
