VATICAN CITY (AP) _ Pope John Paul II received a cross Wednesday made out of metal and other debris from the rubble of Ground Zero in New York.
The cross was presented to John Paul during his weekly public audience by a delegation of the Port Authority Police Department of New York and New Jersey.
In greeting them, the pope said the delegation honored ``their fellow officers who gave their lives in last year’s terrorist attack on New York City.″
Of the nearly 3,000 people who died in the Sept. 11 attack, 38 were Port Authority police personnel working in or near the World Trade Center towers.
