Wimpy’s Grill to close after decades in Durham
After 32 years in Durham, Wimpy’s Grill will close its doors on Friday.
The breakfast and lunch joint, known for its homemade chili, biscuits and fresh ground burgers, will close its doors after its normal lunch service at 2 p.m., owner Larry Mishoe told customers on Wednesday.
Mishoe and his wife, Brenda, opened Wimpy’s in 1987 on Hicks Street. Larry worked in the front taking orders at the lunch counter, while Brenda manned the grill. The lunch counter often became so overrun with orders that they would have to take the phone off the hook. The phone remained off the hook Thursday morning.
“There are customers that come in every single day,” Brenda Mishoe told the Tar Heel Traveler in 2016.
One of Wimpy’s famous menu items is the Garbage Burger, a bacon double cheeseburger topped with chili, slaw, pickles, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, ketchup and mustard. It attracted the attention of The Travel Channel’s “Man v. Food,” which sent host Adam Richman to try the burger.
