U.S. Sailor Found Dead

November 26, 1987

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) _ An American sailor on shore leave was found dead Thursday in a hotel room at Thailand’s well-known Pattaya beach resort.

Four days earlier, another sailor on shore leave shot and wounded two Thai policemen before police shot him to death.

The staff at Diamond Beach Hotel found the American unconscious in a friend’s room and reported it to U.S. Navy authorities, said U.S. Embassy spokesman Ross Petzing. Petzing declined to identify the sailor until his relatives had been notified.

″He was rushed to the (U.S. aircraft carrier) Ranger and pronounced dead upon arrival by medical authorities,″ Petzing said. The cause of death has not yet been determined, he said.

On Sunday night, 19-year-old Todd K. Unzueta of Torrance, Calif., shot and wounded two Thai policemen at a roadside police booth before one of them killed him. Police said Unzueta was drunk at the time.

The U.S. aircraft carrier, accompanied by five other Navy vessels, anchored Sunday at Pattaya, 100 miles southeast of Bangkok. The fleet leaves the resort Friday.
