JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) _ Beset by economic turmoil and at an impasse with foreign lenders, President Suharto was elected Tuesday to five more years as chief of the nation he has steered with an authoritarian grip since the 1960s.

Without offering specifics, the People's Consultative Assembly _ packed with Suharto's relatives, friends and the military _ said the powers authorize ``speedy action'' against threats. Some analysts say they could enable Suharto to dissolve parliament and ban political parties.
