Reserve officer in Louisiana accidentally shoots relative
GONZALES, La. (AP) — A reserve police officer in Louisiana has been arrested after he accidentally shot a relative at a family gathering.
News outlets reported that 24-year-old Desmond Lane was fired by the Gonzales police department after the shooting late Saturday.
The police department said lane accidentally fired his personal gun and hit a relative. Police say Lane “panicked” and left the scene. He was arrested by Gonzales officers a short time later.
Lane was being held in the Ascension Parish jail Sunday morning on one count of negligent injuring. It was not known if he has an attorney yet to comment on the charges.
The relative’s injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
Gonzales Police Chief Sherman Jackson said Lane used “poor judgment.” and has been fired.
Louisiana State Police are investigating.
