Pete Samu to miss Brumbies’ Super Rugby semifinal
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Wallabies and former Crusaders back rower Pete Samu has been ruled out of the ACT Brumbies’ Super Rugby semifinal against Argentina’s Jaguares next weekend with a hamstring strain.
Samu, who won a Super Rugby title with the Crusaders in 2017, scored two tries in the Brumbies 38-13 win over South Africa’s Sharks in a quarterfinal in Canberra on Saturday. He remained in Australia on Sunday as his teammates traveled to Buenos Aires for Friday’s semifinal.
Samu has been a key player for the Brumbies this season in the absence of injured Wallabies back rower David Pocock.
“Pete’s played such a big role in getting us to where we are,” Brumbies coach Dan McKellar said. “I know we’ve got a little bit of depth in the back row and someone will step up to do a job. But players want to be playing at this time of year and (Samu) deserves to be.”
Samu’s place in the Brumbies squad for the semifinal has been taken by former Wallaby Blake Enever.
