The season of giving

November 27, 2018

HARLINGEN — Help local nonprofits kick off the charitable season today by making a Giving Tuesday donation.

Giving Tuesday is celebrated the Tuesday following Thanksgiving.

This global movement was created seven years ago with the hopes of connecting diverse groups of individuals, communities and organizations around the world to encourage donating to nonprofits.

A variety of local nonprofits are participating today to help raise funds toward causes that are near and dear to their hearts.

The Humane Society of Harlingen takes in more than 6,000 animals each year.

In an effort to help raise funds needed to continue supporting these animals, the nonprofit is seeking monetary donations.

To make a donation to the Harlingen Humane Society, click the “donate” button on its Facebook page or drop off a donation at the shelter.

La Posada Providencia, a temporary shelter in San Benito for refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants, is also seeking monetary donations this Giving Tuesday.

The shelter is currently serving 94 people.

This is triple the amount of people the shelter helped last year.

“ Sometimes people tell me they only have a dollar and I tell them thank you because with that dollar we can purchase a loaf of bread,” explained La Posada Providencia Program Director Sister Zita Telkamp. “So, no matter how great or small the donation is, we’re always grateful because donations help keep our lights on, have running water and put food on the table.”

To make a donation to La Posada Providencia, visit their website or drop off a donation at the shelter.

Others are getting creative with their fundraising, such as United Way of Northern Cameron County, a nonprofit organization that works toward improving communities’ health, education and financial stability.

Today, a portion of sales from every purchase at participating Chick-Fil-A restaurants in Harlingen will be donated to United Way.

“ For a lot of people, the holiday season is full of joy and happiness, but there are also people who are struggling this time of year,” said United Way of Northern Cameron County Executive Director Jessica Belschner. “So, if you have the financial means to give back, this is a good day to help make this a wonderful time of the year for them.”

Many nonprofits around the Valley are taking part in Giving Tuesday. Check with your favorite organization to see if they’re participating.
