Ernest H. ‘Ernie’ Banks -- Rochester

Ernest H. “Ernie” Banks, age 78, of Rochester, formerly of Pine Island, died suddenly on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Lands Lutheran Church, with Pastor David Krinke officiating. Private family burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home — Mahler Chapel in Pine Island, and for one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

Ernest Henry Banks was born on April 21, 1940, in Durand, Wis., to Max and Loretta (Reinardy) Banks. Ernie grew up in Roscoe Township and attended country school and Pine Island schools.

On Nov. 3, 1962, Ernie married Sharon Alberts at Lands Lutheran Church. They made their home in Pine Island, and Ernie worked for the Dough Boy turkey farm east of Pine Island before going to work for the Pine Island Farmer’s Elevator, which became Farm Country Co-op. Ernie retired after 37 years, and after retirement spent 10 years driving truck for Bob Braaten Construction.

Ernie enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, and riding his Harley Davidson with Sharon and their friends on many trips.

Ernie belonged to the Zumbro Valley Classic Iron Tractors Club, Eagles Club in Rochester and Lands Lutheran Church.

Ernie is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sharon; two sons, Tim (Tina) Banks of Mantorville and Scott Banks of Pine Island; three grandchildren, Brooke Banks of DeForest, Wis., Danyelle Banks of Stewartville and Justin Banks of Pine Island; two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Skylee; and siblings, Don Banks of Murphys, Calif., Viola May of Tucson, Ariz., Rose Andrist of Pine Island and Kathy Krause of Pine Island.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Shirley Burdick McWaters.

Ernie was well liked by everyone.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
