MEXICO CITY (AP) _ A top official from Mexico's attorney general's office was found dead in his car this morning from an apparent suicide. He held a pistol in his right hand, and officials said he died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Juan Manuel Izabal Villicana was slumped over the steering wheel of his black Chevrolet Suburban, parked a block from his house. One spent bullet was found in the car.

The attorney general's office would not confirm the death, but Raul Castanada, the cousin of Izabal's wife, identified the body at the scene, a wide avenue in the south of the city.

Although Izabal was assigned bodyguards, none had accompanied him for at least six months, Castanada said. He did not know why.

Izabal was in charge of the administrative offices of the attorney general's office, which investigates and prosecutes all major drug and organized crime cases in Mexico.

Izabal did not talk about his work and he did not have any known enemies, Castanada said.
