Passenger train hits truck in Vietnam; 1 dead, others hurt
HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — A passenger train hit a truck on the track in central Vietnam, killing the conductor and injuring the truck driver and several train passengers, an official said.
Three train cars derailed in the accident Tuesday night in Quang Tri province, local official Hoang Hoa Tham said. He said the truck driver was seriously hurt but the other injuries were minor.
He said Wednesday that the initial investigation indicated the truck driver ignored the red light and tried to cross the track at a location where it lacks a barrier.
An executive at nearby Dong Ha railway station said workers were working to fix the track and North-South rail service passengers were transferred by buses to get around the gap.
Traffic accidents killed more than 9,000 people last year in Vietnam.
