Wife-Beating, Vicious Portrait of Heavyweight Champ

June 23, 1989

NEW YORK (AP) _ A new biography of Mike Tyson quotes the heavyweight champion as saying he enjoys hurting women and the best punch he ever landed was on ex-wife Robin Givens.

The book, ″Fire and Fear: The Inside Story of Mike Tyson,″ was written by former Tyson friend Jose Torres, himself a former boxing champion. Excerpts of the book were published in today’s editions of the New York Daily News, and further portions were scheduled to be published in the August Playboy.

In one, Tyson was quoted and saying that he once fought with Givens and ″she really offended me and I went BAM. She flew backwards, hitting every ... wall in the apartment. That was the best punch I’ve ever thrown in my entire life.″

Tyson also details a sadistic viewpoint on sex: ″I like to hurt women when I make love to them. I like to hear them scream with pain, to see them bleed.″

The office of Tyson adviser Don King, who is also portrayed unflatteringly in the book, said the two were both considering filing suit.

Tyson and Givens married in February 1988 and divorced less than a year later. The actress, who appears in the television series ″Head of the Class,″ had accused her husband of physical violence during their marriage.

Talking about his first round knockout of Jesse Ferguson, Tyson said, ″I was trying to push his nose bone up into his brains.″

The book also provides unflattering portraits of a greedy Givens and an anti-Semitic King.

Torres writes of Givens screaming at one of Tyson’s representatives at the investment firm of Merrill Lynch: ″I want my money 3/8 Where is my money? You’re one of Cayton’s boys. We’re going to take our money out of here.″

Tyson’s managers were Jim Jacobs and Billy Cayton. Jacobs has died, and Cayton and Tyson are embroiled in a bitter court fight over the champion’s finances.

King, the fight promoter who has recently become Tyson’s adviser, told the Daily News both he and the heavyweight champion were considering lawsuits against Torres, and he called the book ununauthorized and a smear. King’s office said today that he and Tyson would be releasing a statement later in the day with more detail.
