HS FOOTBALL: Valley View, Delaware Valle Games Pushed Back Again

November 17, 2018

A snowstorm that crippled the region Thursday and caused the postponement of Friday’s slate of high school football playoff games, has forced officials to postpone two of those games one more day.

Now, the District 2 Class 4A championship game between Dallas (11-1) and Valley View (12-0) will be played Sunday at 7 p.m. at John Henzes/Veterans Memorial Stadium. Also, Delaware Valley (9-3) will face State College (11-1) on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the venue changing from Hazleton Area High School to Danville High School.

Simply put, there is too much snow on the fields to be cleared in time to play today.

Valley View head coach George Howanitz put out a call for volunteers Friday to help remove the snow from both the field and the bleachers at John Henzes/Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Cougars were scheduled to have a walkthrough Friday and an additional workout today to make up for lost time because of the storm.

“It’s unusual, but we talked about it, it’s something you can’t do anything about,” Howanitz said. “The kids are ready to go now and a few extra days aren’t going to matter than much.”

District 2 football chairman Mike Ognosky said the district will request the winner of the Dallas-Valley View game have its state quarterfinal game moved to Saturday next week.

“I haven’t seen the kids since Thursday in school, so it’s not an ideal situation,” Delaware Valley coach Keith Olsommer said. “There is not a whole lot we can do about it. We tried to have a practice (Friday), but a couple of communities that make up our district weren’t cleared yet. At least, this way we can get together (today) and get the kids refocused.”

The forecast for Sunday calls for temperatures to reach the mid-30s during the afternoon with a possibility of flurries, according to the Weather Channel. Sunday evening is expected to be cloudy with a 50-percent chance of snow, accumulating 1 to 3 inches.

Today is expected to be mostly cloudy with a high near 40 and a 10-percent chance of precipitation.

The remainder of today’s the schedule will go on as planned. Those games are:

• Lakeland (9-3) will play Scranton Prep (11-1) for the District 2 Class 3A championship at 1 p.m. at Scranton Memorial Stadium.

• Tri-Valley (9-3) takes on Lackawanna Trail (11-1) in a PIAA Class 1A first-round game at 7 p.m., also at Scranton Memorial Stadium.

• Wallenpaupack (9-3) faces Hollidaysburg (8-4) in a PIAA Class 5A first-round game at 1 p.m. at Danville High School’s Ironman Stadium.

• Dunmore (9-3) will play West Catholic (10-2) in a PIAA Class 2A first-round game at 1 p.m. at Northern Lehigh High School.
