ESTACADA, Ore. (AP) _ A van carrying forest workers went over a 100-foot cliff Thursday, killing one person and critically injuring at least four, authorities said.

The accident occurred on a Cascade Mountain highway near Bagby Hot Springs, about 30 miles southeast of Portland, as the van carried at least 13 tree planters home from work, said sheriff’s Lt. Sherwood Stillman.

Three National Guard helicopters were sent to assist with the rescue, said Karole Scott, a spokeswoman for a National Guard rescue squadron in Portland.
