ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland (AP) _ Oleg Matveev scored two goals six minutes apart in the first half Tuesday, leading the Soviet Union to a 7-0 rout of Mexico in Group D of the under-16 World Cup soccer tournament.

Matveev opened the scoring in the 14th minute when he dribbled around three Mexican defenders to beat goaltender Oscar Resano from a sharp angle about 20 yards out.

Thirteen minutes later, Matveev made it 2-0 when he banged in a pass from teammate Vladislav Kadyrov. Yuri Nikiforov also scored twice for the Soviets - in the 31st and 52nd minutes - while Anatoli Muskinka, Mirdjalil Kadymov, and Serghei Bejenar completed the scoring.
