Six departments called to Free Soil fire
FREE SOIL — Six fire departments responded to a house and garage fire Wednesday evening at 8556 N. Democrat St. in Free Soil.
The house had a single male occupant, but he was not home at the time of the fire, Vince Williams, Free Soil-Meade fire chief said. The man also owned a cat, which has not yet been found.
The property was across the street from the Free Soil Senior Center. Embers carried by the wind also ignited part of the Pirates ball field, but the flames soon went out.
Responders arrived at the scene at about 5 p.m. following a call from central dispatch. Fire trucks from Free Soil-Meade, Fountain, Grant, Custer, Sauble-Elk-Eden and Scottville fire departments all emptied their tanks to extinguish the fire. It took about 14,000 gallons of water to put out the flames, Williams said.
“The house was fully engulfed upon arrival,” Williams said. “Shortly thereafter the garage caught fire too. (The need for) water was a problem. We had it coming from all directions... We emptied every tanker we had.”
