NEW YORK (AP) _ Talk show host Jerry Springer has signed a book deal that will provide a behind-the-scenes account of his popular and controversial television program.

The Daily News reported today that Springer signed a seven-figure contract on Monday to write ``Ringmaster.''

The book is to include stories about episodes of the show that have aired, as well as programs that never made it to television. The book is also to include photographs and details about the show's infamous fights.

St. Martin's Press is to print an initial 250,000 copies for the book's November publication.

Also on Monday, Springer told a meeting of the New York State Broadcasters Association that he noticed his show's ratings increased after he decided to pursue a more youthful audience.

``Young people just like craziness,'' Springer said.

``The show is stupid, I know that. But it's OK, one hour a day, to be that way.''
