Mets Beat Angels With Dramatic Home Runs

June 12, 2005

NEW YORK (AP) _ Cliff Floyd hit a three-run homer with two outs in the 10th inning and Marlon Anderson had a tying inside-the-park home run in the ninth, lifting the New York Mets to a 5-3 comeback victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night.

Floyd connected on a 3-2 pitch from reliever Brendan Donnelly (4-2) after just missing a homer earlier in the at-bat. It was his 15th homer of the season and came after he had struck out three times.

Darin Erstad’s RBI single against Braden Looper (2-1) had put the Angels ahead 3-2 in the top of the 10th.

Jose Reyes, celebrating his 22nd birthday, popped a single to left leading off against Donnelly. Mike Cameron walked but Donnelly came back to strike out Carlos Beltran and Mike Piazza. That brought up Floyd, who sent a shot over the center-field fence.

The Angels had gone ahead on an unearned run after an error by first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz. Erstad, who had been 0-for-4, followed the error with his hit against Looper.

The Angels nursed a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

Then Anderson tied the score with his homer off Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez. The ball caromed away from center fielder Steve Finley, who ran it down in right-center field as Anderson circled the bases. He barely beat the play at the plate, colliding face-first into Bengie Molina’s mask on slide.

It was the 13th pinch-hit this season for Anderson, who leads the majors, and the first inside-the-park homer for the Mets since Timo Perez did it against Philadelphia on Sept. 24, 2000. It was Anderson’s seventh career pinch-hit home run.

Jarrod Washburn, bidding for just his second win in his last seven starts, limited the Mets to six hits over 6 1-3 innings and allowed his only run when he walked opposing pitcher Kris Benson with the bases loaded in the second inning. He struck out three and walked two.

Washburn was lifted in the seventh after surrendering a one-out pinch-hit single to Miguel Cairo. Scott Shields relieved and retired Reyes and Cameron to end the inning. Rodriguez came on in the ninth.

The Angels scored in the second inning when Garret Anderson led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Dallas MacPherson. Anderson then scored as Molina hit into a double play.

In the bottom of the second, Piazza and Floyd opened with singles. Two outs later, Kaz Matsui walked, loading the bases. After Benson walked on four pitches, forcing in the tying run, Adam Kennedy went far behind second base for Reyes’ bouncer and flipped to Orlando Cabrera for the force play, ending the inning.

Notes: The start of the game was delayed 1 hour, 24 minutes by rain. ... The Mets video board did some All-Star game electioneering, urging votes for 3B David Wright and SS Reyes. ... CF Beltran robbed Molina of a two-run homer in the seventh, going up over the fence for his drive. ... Plate umpire Larry Young borrowed a catcher’s helmet and mask from the Angels when his broke. He got his own back after repairs were made. Then he took a pitch off his right knee.
