Student Says She Was Raped Twice Within 12 Days At All-Male Dorm
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) _ Two Texas Christian University roommates were arrested after a woman told police she was raped by one as the other slept nearby, then raped by the other 12 days later.
Sophomores James E. Kiehle and Judd Payne, both 19, were free on bond and had not been formally charged by Friday. They were kicked off campus pending a disciplinary review.
The 20-year-old woman told police Payne attacked her Oct. 4 while Kiehle slept in their room at the all-male Clark Hall. She said she returned to the dormitory Monday and was grabbed and thrown into the pair’s room, where Kiehle sexually assaulted her without Payne present.
She said she believed the attack was a warning not to tell anyone because Kiehle told her, ``You don’t want this to happen again, do you?″
Later the night of Oct. 4, two friends took the woman to a hospital for scratch marks on her back and a bite on her right shoulder. Hospital officials called Fort Worth police and the woman reported both assaults for the first time.
``We’re happy that this woman came forward, but saddened by the fact that it took two rapes before she did,″ said a police spokeswoman, Lt. Pat Kneblick.
The last sexual assault reported at the school was in 1991. More training on the subject of acquaintance rape is being organized for all students, said a school spokesman, Rick L’Amie.
Kiehle, from Fort Worth, was arrested Tuesday. Payne, from Waukee, Iowa, turned himself in Wednesday.
Ms. Kneblick said Payne and Kiehle likely will each face one count of sexual assault, punishable by a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
``We are working on getting all the tests together so we can submit it all at once to the (district attorney),″ she said. ``The D.A.’s office wouldn’t act on anything until they had everything they needed.″
Directory assistance had no telephone number for Kiehle and Payne. In addition to criminal charges, the two could be expelled.
