JACKSON, Miss. (AP) _ A backup singer for the rap band LL Cool J was treated and released at a hospital after he was shot in the buttocks following a concert, authorities said.

Earl Mathias, who uses the stage name ''E Love,'' and two other rap performers were leaving a restaurant where they had eaten after the concert Sunday night when about 20 young people armed with sticks and bottles approached, threatening them, police Sgt. Chip Tippen said Monday.

A shot was fired as the three ran through the restaurant's parking lot and started climbing a chain-link fence to escape, police said. Only Mathias was wounded.

He was treated and released Sunday night at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center, the hospital said.
