Landmark status recommended for imperiled Omaha building

August 10, 2018

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Omaha Landmarks Heritage Preservation Commission has recommended local landmark status for a downtown building that could be torn down to make way for a new juvenile justice center.

Wednesday’s vote doesn’t mean the building can’t be demolished. The vote is only for a recommendation that would face scrutiny from the Omaha Planning Board and, finally, the City Council.

Building owner Bob Perrin says he hopes the commission’s vote will encourage the county to change its mind about pursuing eminent domain to acquire the property.

The county hopes to create juvenile and family courtrooms and related services to replace cramped quarters in the Douglas County Courthouse.
