Underground Railroad classes offered at OUS

September 2, 2018

IRONTON - Ohio University Southern will hold a community education class starting Sept. 4 about Lawrence County’s role in the Underground Railroad. The course is being taught on Tuesday evenings in September by local historian Chris Saunders.

Ohio had the most active network of any other of the Underground Railroad in helping slaves make their way to freedom prior to the Civil War. An unknown number of escaping slaves crossed the Ohio River in the Burlington and Ironton areas, according to a release.

The class will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays. The cost for the course is $59. To register email ous-community.edu@ohio.edu.
