Savanna pedestrian hit, killed; driver charged with DUI

SAVANNA – A 78-year-old pedestrian, owner of Kness Trucking in Chadwick, was killed when she was struck by a drunken driver around 8 p.m. Thursday on Adams near Main Street, the Savanna Police Department said in a news release this morning.

Judy A. Kness had to be removed from under the car and died at the scene. An autopsy will be done later today, Carroll County Coroner Matt Jones said.

Darrel Sweeney, 65, of Savanna, is in Carroll County Jail, charged with aggravated DUI, the release said.

In Illinois, the penalty for a DUI resulting in death is 3 to 7 years in prison.

Kness Trucking Inc. is a longtime, family-owned long-haul and livestock transport company at 113 W. Third St.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Law Jones Funeral Home in Savanna.
