MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) _ Retired Navy Capt. Quentin C. Crommelin, the last surviving member of a family of World War II veterans who had a Navy ship named in their honor, died Monday of cancer. He was 78.
Crommelin and his four brothers, known as ``The Crommelin Boys,″ all served in the Navy during the war. At least one of the brothers served in every major engagement of the Pacific campaign.
In 1981, the Navy christened the frigate USS Crommelin in the brothers’ honor.
Quentin Crommelin graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1941, commanded the USS Shasta and the USS Lexington during the war, and saw combat duty at Guadalcanal.
