WEB.COM TOUR: Late Slip Costly To Matthews At Abaco Classic

January 23, 2019

With the end in sight, Dupont native Brandon Matthews stumbled to the finish line for the second straight day. The 24-year-old former PIAA champion at Pittston Area made a quadruple-bogey 9 on the par-5 eighth hole in Tuesday’s third round of the Web.com Tour’s Bahamas Great Abaco Classic at The Abaco Club. The latest misstep marked the fourth time in seven rounds that Matthews made double bogey or worse on his closing or penultimate hole. Matthews finished with a 4-over-par 75, yet managed to move up six spots and is in 42nd place after a day that saw only seven of 65 players break par. The day started with a birdies on the 10th and 15th. A birdie on the par-5 first hole, the start of his final nine, saw him reach 3 under for the day and 2 under for the tournament. But bogeys on Nos. 5 and 7 brought him back to even, and the quadruple bogey moved him out of a tie for 18th. Contact the writer: sports@citizensvoice.com
