SAINT JOHN, New Brunswick (AP) _ Michel Bassole scored in the 58th minute when U.S. goalkeeper Mark Dulle dropped the ball in front of the net Tuesday, giving the Ivory Coast a 1-0 victory over the United States in Group B at the under-16 World Cup soccer tournament.

A pro-U.S. crowd of about 2,000 watched as Dulle coughed up the ball to Bassole, who turned and fired it past the startled American.

''I can't condemn our effort,'' said U.S. coach Roy Rees. ''The unfortunate part is that at this level, you can never predict who will make a mistake.''

Ivory Coast goalkeeper Mamadou Kanigui kept his shutout with a few key saves, including a diving lunge to his left on a hard shot by American forward Steve Snow midway through the first half.
