Boy Killed En Route Home After Running Away From Juvenile Center
BOYNTON BEACH, Fla (AP) _ A boy who ran away from a juvenile home so that he could visit his family was struck by a car and killed as he pedaled a stolen bicycle along an interstate highway, police said.
Richard Potter, 11, was killed on Interstate 95 early Wednesday. He was trying to make the 300-mile trip to Palatka with a friend from the group home near Davie. The other boy was not hurt.
No charges were filed against the driver who hit Richard. The woman was unable to see the boy as he weaved between lanes, said Highway Patrol Sgt. Debbie Hoar.
Richard had lived at the state-run home for less than a week.
Jan Abee, with the state Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services in Broward County, said law prevented her from discussing the boy’s record.
She said a child’s first two weeks at a state home are a critical period of adjustment.
″If only the child would have given it a chance.″ Ms. Abee said.
