Five Workers Splashed With Contaminated Water

August 16, 1985

RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) _ Five workers at the defunct C Reactor on the Hanford nuclear reservation were splashed with contaminated water, but the exposure was minimal, a UNC Nuclear Industries spokeswoman said.

The workers were contaminated Thursday when water surged in a hose they were using to wash a storage basin in the reactor, splashing them with particles from the basin’s surface, said Karen Scotti.

The workers were decontaminated by showering after the incident, and then returned to work, Ms. Scotti said.

None of the workers received radiation exposure of more than one one- hundredth that allowed by the U.S. Department of Energy in its federal occupational exposure guidelines, she said.

Officials are investigating the cause of the water surge.
