Coast Guard suspends search for missing boater after recovering body from Lake Erie
VERMILION, Ohio -- The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search Saturday for a missing boater in Lake Erie after a body matching his description was found.
The missing boater was located at about noon on Saturday by a “good Samaritan” about three miles north of the mouth of the Vermilion River, Ensign Justin Bommer said.
The identity of the man, who was not wearing a life jacket, has not been released.
The search for the missing boater began Friday night and continued into Saturday as the Coast Guard was assisted by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the Huron police and fire departments and the Canadian Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard urges everyone to wear a life jacket at all times when boating, especially when alone. Bommer also suggested people wear bright-colored clothing to help make it easier for rescuers, and check the weather before venturing out.
