Elderly Idaho Couple Resting Today

April 13, 1987

IOLA, Kan. (AP) _ An elderly Idaho couple was resting today after a three-week odyssey that included 13 days in a snowbound car and several wrong turns that left them driving aimlessly hundreds of miles across Kansas and Colorado.

Orville Obendorf, 71, was being treated at a Hays hospital for frostbite to his feet suffered during the couple’s 13-day stay in snowdrifts near Norton. His wife, Nellie, 65, was staying with her sister in Iola.

″She’s just exhausted,″ Georgia Roberts said of her sister.

The couple survived on Girl Scout cookies and diet soda after blizzards nearly covered their car before they were rescued April 4 by a farmer. They were discharged from a hospital near Norton on April 8, but instead of pressing on to Iola they turned back towards Nampa, Idaho.

They stopped overnight in Eagle, Colo., then made another wrong turn and ended up back Friday night in Kansas. They had driven 660 miles to end up in Quinter, 60 miles from Norton.

Obendorf was in stable condition at Hadley Regional Medical Center in Hays, where his stay could range from a few days to a few weeks, spokeswoman Cynthia Anschutz said today.
