Moondancer Wins American Handicap
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) _ Dark Moondancer pressed the pace inside, eventually took the lead in the stretch and went on to win the $150,000 American Handicap at Hollywood Park on Tuesday.
A slight favorite at odds of 9-5, the 5-year-old British-bred justified his support by beating Sardauker by 1 1/2 lengths. Ridden by Chris McCarron and carrying high weight of 122 pounds, Dark Moondancer covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:46 3-5.
McCarron angled his horse off the rail as they neared the far turn and assumed the lead as the field turned into the stretch. He slowly drew clear without being seriously threatened.
Sunshine Street, who engaged Dark Moondancer for the early lead, held on to third _ a neck behind the rallying runner-up.
Dark Moondancer paid $5.80, $3.40 and $2.40. Sardauker, who carried 113 pounds, paid $5 and $2.80, while Sunshine, carrying 119 pounds, paid $2.60 to show.
The victory was worth $90,000 for owner Charles Cella and increased Dark Moondancer’s career earnings to $775,245.
Falcon Flight, Martiniquais and Takarian rounded out the order of finish.
